Migraine headaches were ruining her life…

For about 5 years, Abigail had been suffering with daily headaches. That’s right, a headache every single day and approximately 10-15 migraines each month. Through those years, she tried everything to get relief – neurologists, massage, medications, even counseling (as if it was psychosomatic). But the pain was real, and it was taking over her life.

How Barbara overcame her dizziness and vertigo

Vertigo and dizziness were preventing Barbara from enjoying life.

The dizziness struck Barbara suddenly and violently a few years back. While teaching in her classroom, she became unsteady and dizzy. All of the signs suggested that she was having a stroke, but she didn’t. It was a severe and acute neurological shut down, and it was terrible.

As soon as she could handle it, Barbara started vestibular therapy to try and regain some function. Over the course of a few months, she had made steady gains. She got back to the point that she was able to drive and work, but the dizziness continued to plague her. It prevented her from enjoying life and feeling happy and fulfilled. She was alive, but not truly living…

She was determined to end her dizziness.

Because Barbara continued to feel dizzy and unsteady, she pursued and persisted until she found the right approach. There are not many options near her home on Maryland’s eastern shore, so she had to travel quite a distance to find help. After visiting our office months ago and having a positive experience, she decided that she was going to come to PA and stay as long as it took until she was better.

It was a bold move, but she did it. And after 2 weeks of intensive treatment and effort, she got her wish.

It was remarkable to see how much she changed in such a short amount of time. In under 14 days, she went from dizzy and unsteady, to grounded, steady and uplifted. She was able to resume her favorite activities, exercise without dizziness and begin living the life she deserves.

Solutions to end the vertigo and dizziness.

If you know what Barbara has gone through, then you know how bad it can be. If you or a loved one continue to suffer with chronic dizziness or vertigo, then our office is the place for you.

Debbie’s Recovery from Chronic Daily Migraine Headaches

Migraine headaches, 14 years of agony, and living pain free.

14 years ago, Debbie was a healthy, happy lady, and then tragedy hit – literally. She was struck on the top of her head by a falling garage door that broke free from its cable. She sustained serious injuries to her head, neck and back and developed chronic pain in each of those areas. Along with that came the migraines. Eventually, Debbie was experiencing migraine headaches nearly every single day. She was missing out on life, barely getting by, and suffering miserably. Although she was alive, there was nothing enjoyable about any given day.

How it feels to have migraine headaches eliminated:

Migraine Treatment Success and Recovery from Depression and Fatigue

Migraine headaches every week, and depression that wasn’t getting better.

When Ms. L came to see us initially, she was in an awful state. She had extreme fatigue and was basically confined to her couch or bed. There was depression, deep depression that wiped out any interest or desire in life’s activities. And there were migraines too, lots of them.

In the beginning, she didn’t even care about getting better. Her family took the initiative and nearly forced her to get the care that she needed. But as the fog lifted and the pain started to subside, Ms. L started to ‘wake back up’. As she started feeling like herself again, she started fighting tooth and nail to squeeze every drop of improvement that she could from our office. It was amazing to see how, week by week, she would have more energy, less pain, and the depression started loosing it’s grip on her, until one day she realized that it was all gone.

Migraine recovery is possible: Ms. L’s story:

It was a happy ending that we couldn’t have imagined ourselves. The headaches are gone, the energy is back, she’s back to work and feeling good about her life, not to mention how much better her family became as she was freed from her burden. We have been honored to care for Ms. L and are so happy to see her in her new pain-free life.

ABC 27 News Features Dr. Sullivan and our migraine treatment. Harrisburg, Lancaster, York, Camp Hill, Mechanicsburg

Dr. Sullivan’s clinical trial for migraine headache treatment is being published.

As seen on ABC 27 News recently, Dr. David Sullivan will soon become a published author for his migraine therapy. Over the past year, he and the staff at Keystone Chiropractic Neurology have been busy conducting a clinical trial for a new type of treatment that Dr. Sullivan discovered through the course of his daily clinical work. This procedure has never been used as a treatment for migraine, but the technique has been around for decades. Typically, ‘insufflation’ or the act of inducing air or pressure into a body space, is used as a diagnostic tool for ear infections. What Dr. Sullivan has discovered is that the same instrument can be applied to someone experiencing a migraine headache, and for some, the results can be profound.

A Fibromyalgia Specialist Doctor that achieves permanent pain relief? Harrisburg, Camp Hill, Mechanicsburg, York

The Fibromyalgia problem:

Let's cut to the chase, Fibromyalgia is a NEUROLOGICAL problem and yet is still primarily assessed and addressed by rheumatologists. Over the last decade, study after study have repeatedly shown that it is the brain itself which is the primary culprit in fibromyalgia, not the skin, muscles or nerves. So why is mainstream medicine  still treating fibromyalgia as if the brain is fine, but the muscles are bad? It baffles me…

If you are being treated for fibromyalgia 'muscle pain', or 'fascia pain' and the chronic fatigue which accompanies it, and you are still suffering, you are missing out on a pain-free life. I'll put that another way, if your doctor(s) have not addressed your brain function, they have missed almost the entire reason for your pain.

Let's take a walk through the scientific literature and see how the current medical treatment models for fibromyalgia are completely off base.

The Real Science Behind Fibromyalgia:

First, let's just set the record straight on what the medical journals are saying about fibromyalgia:

The American Academy of Neurology's 'Neurology Now' states in 2009:

A growing body of information suggests fibromyalgia is a true neurologic disorder.

A subsidiary of the British Medical Journal, the Annals of Rheumatic Diseases states in 2012:

muscle fatigue may be of central origin and supports the notion of central nervous dysfunction as basic pathological changes in fibromyalgia.

Even the Journal of Pain states in 2009:

more recent study has identified neurobiological underpinnings supporting many of the symptoms associated with this condition (fibromyalgia).

Expert Opinion on Emerging Drugs states in 2010:

effective treatment of the pain of FMS must be directed at the function of the Central Nervous System…

Current Pain and Headache Reports in 2012 states:

Fibromyalgia is a primary brain disorder…

Even further, the journal Pain Research and Treatment states in 2012:

FMS is now recognized to be grounded in the neurological domain with evidence of dysregulation of pain processing.

My conclusion is that if you are being treated for a muscle/joint/tissue problem, you are being severely mis-trested. The BRAIN is the culprit in fibromyalgia, so why is it not taking center stage in your treatment?

At Keystone Chiropractic Neurology, our main focus in fibromyalgia is treating the brain, and that's why we get such great results. But more on that later…

Fibromyalgia and Brain Therapies.

What does mainstream medicine say about brain treatments for fibromyalgia?

Best Practice & Research Clinical Rheumatology states in 2011:

successful treatment (of Fibromyalgia) was associated with increased brain activity

Current Opinion in Supportive & Palliative Care states in 2011:

several studies now illustrate that the brain is capable of tremendous plasticity both in function and structure due to repeated and ongoing pain. However, emerging data suggest that this plasticity can be reversible after successful pain treatment.

The Journal of Neuroscience states in 2011:

functional and structural brain abnormalities—specifically in the left DLPFC—are reversible, suggesting that treating chronic pain can restore normal brain function in humans.

And what is the state of drug therapy for fibromyalgia?

Clinical Pharmacology states in 1987:

Analgesics, anti-inflammatory drugs, phenothiazines, tricyclic antidepressants, and the tricyclic muscle relaxant cyclobenzaprine have been used; low doses ofamitriptyline or cyclobenzaprine…

The point is, if this is YOUR fibromyalgia therapy, it hasn't been revised much in 25 years, and that's why you are still in pain.

Getting over fibromyalgia:

Ask yourself these important questions:

Isn't it time that your fibromyalgia therapy reflects the most current understanding of what is really causing your pain?

How many years have been robbed from your life by chasing ineffective therapies targeting the wrong issue?

How many more years do you want to suffer needlessly?

Do you want to live a pain free life?

If living pain free is what you want, we have the tools to help you get there. Our fibromyalgia therapy is designed to fix the root of the cause, not just drug you into a zombie-like state.

When you're ready to live the life you deserve, call 717 697-0589 and ask to receive your new patient paperwork. Don't suffer another year with fibromyalgia.

Migraine Treatment – Options, Questions, and Information

Chronic Migraine Headaches and the standard medical approach

If you suffer from chronic migraine headaches, you are not alone. In fact, you are part of a family of migraine sufferers who is much bigger than it should be. And as you know, this is not a happy family.
Chronic migraines affect millions of people in the US and a large percentage of those people experience headaches frequently, if not daily. Of course, the severity and urgency of this problem has prompted the fields of science and healthcare to explore the ways and means to bring relief to the pain. As the knowledge and understanding of migraine headaches continues to grow, there is an immediate need to help people with the pain they continue to experience, even as the process of research continues.
With that being said though, we would like to explore the standard medical options in migraine treatments.

Standard medical treatments for chronic migraine headaches

#1 Medication Management. This is the first choice of allopathic medicine and by far, the most common line of therapy. There are numerous medications prescribed for migraines. They can be prescribed in multiple combinations and for various reasons. Medications can certainly be of benefit, but if you are still suffering with chronic headaches, I would suggest that a very significant piece of the puzzle is missing,or not being addressed. Additionally, if you think about chronic headaches as a raging fire with billowing smoke, medications are only blowing the smoke away, not dousing the underlying fire.
#2 Trigger Point Injections. Trigger points are those muscle knots which can radiate pain far away from where they are located. They can be nasty for sure, but are they really the cause of the chronic headache? Because a muscle only does what they brain tells it to, it would make sense to find out why neurological reasons why the trigger points continue to emerge. Injections can decrease some pain, but they do not solve the underlying dysfunction.
#3 Botox Injections. Here again, injections can be used to alter the function of nerves. Some people do experience good results with Botox injections, but some do not. Completely stopping the normal function of a nerve can result in pain relief, but it certainly alters other, non-pain functions as well.
#4 Lifestyle Management. What you come into contact with through your daily life can be important in the development and exacerbations of headaches. Many factors can be involved in this

The Functional Neurology approach to chronic migraine headaches

After reviewing these standard medical treatments for chronic migraine headaches, it is important to point out that none of them are geared towards problem solving, or figuring out the real cause, or understanding the mechanisms behind the pain, and how to permanently resolve it. So with that being said, let’s outline some of the testing and procedures we use in order to fully investigate and treat chronic migraine headaches.
#1 Check for inflammation. Inflammation can be present in either the body, the brain, or both. The presence of inflammation is a signal that the immune system is overactive and needs to be addressed in order to quench the fire. Chronic inflammation means constant irritation which could affect body tissues as well as nerves and brain tissue, predisposing it to abnormal function. Investigating the causes of immune activation could include factors such as: hidden infections, food allergies, toxic exposure, nutrient depletion,

genes and more…
#2 Check for Neurotransmitter dysfunctions. You’ve probably heard the term ‘chemical imbalance’, but has anyone ever objectively tested your brain chemicals? We have the capability of checking exactly which neurotransmitters may be depleted, or which are overactive. Either situation could predispose to abnormal brain function.
#3 Check for proper function of the brain and nerves. In addition to chemistry, the brain runs on electricity. The vibrancy of the electrical transmission in the brain can be checked during a thorough functional neurology exam. The goal is to determine which ‘circuits’ are involved and to what extent.
#4 Check for hormonal dysfunctions. Multiple hormonal systems can be affected by, and contribute to, chronic migraine headaches. Sometimes, the hormonal issues can be viewed as a ‘chicken or egg’ scenario, but it is important to see exactly how the endocrine system is involved in a situation of chronic migraine headaches. These factors could include the thyroid, adrenals, pancreas, and pituitary glands.
Then what to do about all this…
At Keystone Chiropractic Neurology, our goal is to figure out exactly why you are having chronic migraine headaches, and what to do to fix it. Dr. Sullivan might choose to explore any or all of these health factors, specific to your history and examination. Putting the peices together then, is how treatment can produce excellent results.

If you have been everywhere and tried everything, but the migraine headaches still persist, call 717 697-0589 today at start living the life you deserve.
